Character Essay
Character Essay
Have you ever imagined what it’s like to be a Sniper? In the story “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty, we are able to experience what it’s like to be a Sniper. Liam O’Flaherty does an outstanding job helping us view the beliefs and feelings of a Sniper. The Sniper mentioned in the story is from a town named Dublin. The story takes place 1920’s, when the Republicans and Free Starters were in a Civil War. To my opinion the Sniper was Indifferent, Risk-taking, and Wise. He demonstrates these characteristics throughout his actions. His actions reveal his true personality and his way of thought.
The Republican Sniper is an indifferent man. An excellent example is when he killed the elder lady. “Then around the corner of a slide street came an old woman. She began to the man in the torrent of the car. The Sniper fired again. The woman whirled around and fell with a shriek in the gutter” (pg.213). The Sniper killed the elderly lady for the reason that she snitched on him. It’s important because as you can see, the Sniper has no compassion for anyone who interferes with him.
The Republican Sniper is also a Risk-taker. “He paused for a moment, considering whether he should risk a smoke. It was dangerous. The flash might be seen in the darkness, and there were enemies watching, He decided to take the risk” (pg.213). Knowing that he might get caught and killed by the other Snipers, the Republican Sniper still decides to light a smoke. It’s significant because that’s the type of people you need in a war, brave and risk-taking as a Sniper.
The Sniper is also very wise and doesn’t waste a single minute. He is always thinking of new ways to kill his enemy. “Taking off his cap, he placed it over the muzzle of his rifle. Then he pushed the rifle slowly upward over the carpet, until the cap was visible from the opposite of the street.” (pg.214). the Sniper tricked his enemy into thinking he was dead so that once the enemy stood up; the Republican Sniper would shoot him. It’s essential because you get a glimpse of how the Sniper’s in general have to kind of play, and make up techniques to survive at war.
In general the Sniper was a wise guy, because he showed us how he could trick other Snipers. A risk-taker, because of him impulse in smoking that cigarette at whatever cost. Indifferent, then in the end changes his thoughts. The Republican Sniper apparently seems to be a bad person but, deep down he regrets things and feels bad for doing them. In the end of the story Liam O’Flaherty states that the Sniper began to act strange, and it seemed like it was all coming back to him the killing everything.
Alone by Edward Allen Poe (1875)
From childhood’s hour i have not been
As others were–I have not seen
As others saw–I could not bring
My passions from a common spring–
From the same source i have not taken
My sorrow–I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone–
And all I lov’d–I lov’d alone–
Then–in my childhood– in the dawn
Of a most stormy life– was drawn
From ev’ry depth of good and i’ll
The mystery which blinds me still–
From the torrent, or the fountain–
From the red cliff of the mauntian–
From the sun that’ round me roll’d
In it’s autumn tint of gold–
From the lightning in the sky
As it passed me flying by–
From the thunder, and the storm–
And the cloud that took the form
(when the rest of heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view.

Favorite Celtic Mythology God
My faorite Celtic Mythology god is Dian Cecht. He grabbed my attention because he was the god of Healing, and the Physican of the Tutha de Danann. He had a brother who was king of Nuada. He also made a silver hand for his brother because he had lost it in battle. Dian had a son Miach and the myth says that he had him slew out of jeoulosy. Dian was alos grandfather of Lugh. Dian was a craft- god who usually ised magic to heal worriors. Dian was mad at his son Miach because he had replaced the hand his father made with Nuada’s own hand. Dian said that it was disrespectful of his son to have done that after his hard work. That was the reason why Dian blessed the great worrior Slane.
